Description

The Greater Red Zeboo : Female
Plains Zebra x Red Kangaroo
(Standard Agouti Coloration)

Introduction
The Greater Red Zeboo, once called the Reins Zeboo until classified further, is the largest and most colorful of the Zeboo sub-species. Black stripes in females differ from those of males, and are limited to half way down their back. Females of this species are also smaller then males, reaching an average of 15.2hh.

Striped Pattern
It is not common to find Zeboo which lack counter-shaded stripes, however some do exist. It is more common to find Barred Zeboo, which has wide red/brown stripes that fade into the coat. Shadow Stripes are unique to Plains Zebra crosses, and these can usually be seen on the back end between the main bars. Some times these stripes do not appear till the Zeboo is mature, but usually it is noticeable after the first shedding. The Greater Red Zeboo may also come with black Bands on the tail. We call this patterned Banded, and it is highly desired. Zeboo that are Banded will usually have that description in their color, for instance the Zeboo seen here would be called a Banded Greater Red.

The Dilution Gene
The Dilution gene in Zeboo is not like that of the Cream gene seen in horses. Where as Cream is on the C-Locus, this locus is responsible for Albino in the Zeboo. So instead researchers believe that there is another dilution gene, which they have labeled as D for Dilution. This is a recessive gene, so that means that DD horses are not carriers of the Dilution. Typically carriers of recessive dilutions do not show signs of being diluted. However in some species of animals (such as rats) this has been shown not to be the case all the time. As such Dd Zeboo appear to have chocolate body stripes instead of the typical black. These may not be noticed at birth as many Zeboo are born with brown stripes which darken with age. However if the stripes do not turn black after the first shedding, then your Zeboo is most likely Chocolate.

Genetics of the Greater Red Zeboo
The genetics behind this species of Zeboo work differently then that of horses (though Thoroughbreds have been used in some breeding programs). Where as most equine genes are dominate, many genes in the Zeboo act as recessives.
